About Rituals

sheTIME Rituals showcases rituals that celebrate the feminine cycle.

All of us use rituals (defined sets of actions with symbolic value) to mark, celebrate or remember people, events or transitions that are important to us. Think of our actions at birthdays, funerals, marriage, toasts, remembrance day, anniversaries, daily prayer, even Sunday lunch! Participating in rituals confirms our bonds with our communities, our traditions, our gods, and even the human race itself. Their repetition reinforces the beliefs and values of each society. They are thus extremely powerful, and affect us spiritually, emotionally, mentally and physically.

We believe that we can harness this power consciously to support our lives, by taking responsibility and exercising discernment as to how and what we celebrate.

Rethinking fertility cycle rituals

Karen Houppert points out, in her book The Curse: Confronting the Last Unmentionable Taboo: Menstruation, that even sanitary-product advertising avoids mentioning menstruation by pouring a blue liquid on the sanitary item to demonstrate its absorptiveness. She says that it is “psychologically disorienting for women to look out at a world where their reality doesn’t exist.”

sheTIME encourages women to discover or develop rituals which proclaim that feminine reality does exist and offer the opportunity to celebrate and enhance the entire menstrual cycle, including, but not limited to, menstruation.
